How your hands can improve your mental health

What’s your favorite hobby?

Comment below and let me know; I literally love getting to know you on a more personal level 💛

Mine would have to be cross stitching. I absolutely love how rhythmic and simple it is, but when you’re done you have a beautiful custom design!

The reason why I ask (aside from the fact that we have now exchanged favorite hobbies and are therefore now besties) is because I’m willing to bet your favorite hobby requires a certain amount of function in your hands.

Take golfing, for example. Gotta hold that golf club with something (and it’s not your feet LOL)....

Or my cross stitching hobby. That definitely requires a good amount of finger dexterity.

Baking for sure requires quite a bit of gripping and dexterity.

Right now, I bet you can’t even think of a hobby off the top of your head that doesn’t require a certain amount of work from your hands.

Oftentimes, we don’t even realize just how much our hands do for us until they are plagued with pain, weakness, swelling, or stiffness.

I was reminded of this when I opened my inbox yesterday morning to our children’s school newsletter.

They go to a Montessori school, where they learn by doing. It’s a very hands-on immersive experience.

And this quote was the first thing I read in their newsletter:

“The child gives us a beautiful lesson – that in order to form and maintain our intelligence, we must use our hands.” - Dr. Maria Montessori

How impactful and true this is. We not only need our hands for enjoyment, but we literally learn by using our hands.

This is often why handwriting is a better form of studying than typing. The art of writing out the letters with your hand helps connect what you’re learning to your brain.

Or why you never learned to change a tire by simply watching someone do it - you had to do it yourself to truly understand the process.

Here’s another kicker - being able to use our hands not only influences our ability to learn, but also can impact our health.

“Man, through the use of his hands, as they are energized by mind and will, can influence the state of his own health.” - Mary Reilly.

It’s no secret when your hands are out of commission due to pain, arthritis, stiffness, weakness, etc…

…your mental (and oftentimes, physical) wellbeing suffers.

This is because of that intense connection between your hobbies and your hand functioning.

THIS IS WHY I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT HANDS!!!!!

It’s not just about decreasing your pain, it’s so much more than that (although, that’s always a nice secondary effect of working with me)...

…it’s about helping you actually get back to your hobbies.

It’s about knitting longer.

It’s about baking your grandma’s lemon cream pie.

It’s about painting your dog’s portrait.

It’s about strumming your favorite tune on the guitar.

Once you are able to get back into the flow of your favorite hobby after years of struggling due to your hands, there’s no other feeling like it!
